Coopers Rock Climbing in Coopers rock State Forest gets its name from a legend about a fugitive who hid from the law near what is now the overlook. A cooper by trade, he resumed making barrels at his new mountain hideout, selling them to people in nearby communities.
Coopers Rock climbing is the perfect place for the team to hone their climbing abilities and learn the technical skills needed for the challenging terrain at Seneca Rocks, WV. Wednesday afternoon the group will travel to Seneca Rocks to be awed by its 300-foot fin of quartzite stone.
Coopers rock climbing was done primarily in the 70's and early 80's until a ban on the park were imposed in '85. It is still an awesome place to take pictures while visiting the park.
Coopers Rock offers hunting for deer, turkey, squirrel and grouse. Coopers Rock Lake offers trout, largemouth bass and bluegill fishing opportunities. Coopers Rock and surrounding areas are unparalleled. Areas of techincal singletrack with rocks, smooth fast switchbacks, glade riding and miles of downhill fire roads.
Climbing classes often get there early and setup their ropes. If you want some of these lines, get there early when the park opens. Climb up to a stance below a copper colored flaky area. Cling through this part to easier rock above.
Trail signage is pretty much non-existent. With maybe one or two exceptions, trail junctions featured either no signage or the remnants of a post and nothing else. Trailheads exist on both sides of the road for 1.5 miles. The Virgin Hemlock Trail is located about 2 miles from the exit on cr 73. Kayak and eating a hoagie, well, that?s Almost Heaven. Kayaking, a sport usually reserved for beach vacations, is available daily on the three rivers. Kayak Pittsburgh, a North Shore boating outfitter run by the non-profit organization Venture Outdoors, provides equipment and lessons in the art of kayaking.
Reservations are not taken for the campground, all sites are on a first come first-served basis. Bagged ice and firewood are for sale at the check-in station. Reservations can be made by mail, phone or in person at least 2 days in advance for a minimum of 2 nights, up to a maximum of 14 nights. The reservation is held by paying a deposit of the entire camping fee plus a $5 handling charge.
Finally, Damon's , on Hwy 705 about 1 1/2 miles from the stadium, is known for their ribs as well as their full offerings of sports programming. Not really a sports bar, Firkin Pub offers you a British Pub environment along with darts and pool. Finally, a chance to go to the city I've been researching for the past 5 years. There was a bit of a layover in Kansas along the way, a few deliveries in Nebraska, and a detour through Montana due to bad weather shutting down I-80. Finally arrived back home about 8:30 having added about another 250 miles on the Vol.
